For 2007, the BMW 6 Series coupe and cabriolet models receive satellite pre-wiring and an auxiliary input jack, and Comfort Access and Night Vision as stand-alone options. But the big news is the introduction of the M6 cabriolet, which joins the M6 coupe introduced for 2006.
The 6 Series includes the 650i coupe and cabriolet, which use a 4.8-litre V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic with Steptronic sequential manual mode. The M6 models use a 5.0-litre V10 with seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG), which shifts automatically, or can be operated via the gearshift lever or wheel-mounted paddles.
Features on both the 650i coupe and cabriolet include 18-inch alloy wheels, speed-sensitive steering, adaptive automatic Xenon headlights, fog lights, tire pressure warning system, rain-sensing wipers with heated washer nozzles, alarm with interior motion sensor, auto-dimming exterior and rearview mirrors, three-spoke leather-wrapped heated steering wheel with electric tilt and telescopic, automatic air conditioning, ambiance lighting, power sunroof, twelve-way power heated front seats, three-position driver memory seat, universal garage door opener, CD/MP3 player with eight speakers and two subwoofers, BMW Assist, navigation system and voice control system. The Cabriolet includes a power-operated roof.
The M6 models add 19-inch wheels and M-specific seats, shifter, auto-dimming rear mirror, door sills, and M sport suspension and steering.
The 650i is a balance of strength and subtlety, with superb driving dynamics, a high level of cabin luxury, a lightweight aluminum suspension, and optional Active Steering, which increases or decreases the steering rotation, depending on speed. Given the car’s size, its somewhat artificial steering feel at lower speeds is offset by the ease of handling in tight quarters. The front seat is designed for tall drivers, the rear pretty much for people with no legs: consider this a 2+2 model.
The M6 models feature racing technology and materials, including a carbon roof on the coupe. Expect to experiment for a while before you dial it in to your preferences: there are almost 200 driver-selectable combinations of throttle response, stability control threshold, gearshift speed, suspension stiffness and even engine power, which can be set to 400 or 500 hp at the touch of a button.
